  • It is important to check to see that your short air tubes are in good condition when washing the milking clusters at the end of every milking
  • Listen out for vacuum leaks and scan for cracked tubes while working
  • Proactively checking and changing your short air tubes should form part of your weekly parlour maintenance regime
  • Defective and leaking tubes interfere with the normal pulsation of the liner, resulting in poor milk flow and weak vacuum between the liner and the shell
  • Defective and leaking tubes may result in excessive milk remaining in the quarter which may in turn predispose the cow to getting mastitis

RECYCLING/DISPOSAL INFORMATION

Silicone

Because of silicone’s high durability and ability to withstand extreme temperatures, goods made from silicone are more sustainable as they won’t need replacing anywhere near as often as their plastic counterparts.

Silicone ‘rubber’ is a petroleum based product and after use becomes a stable, non-hazardous, non-toxic, non-biodegradable waste. (It takes over 500 years to break down) It is not possible to re-melt silicone but it can be recycled multiple times without losing its structural integrity.

Silicone recycling facilities are not available everywhere. Silicone usually has to be sent to a specialized recycling company (like TerraCycle) to be properly recycled, where it can be downcycled into lubricants, solar panels and playground mulch.

Please dispose of your silicone products responsibly. Your local authority will be able to advise if it is possible to recycle your used silicone products locally.
