What is an EORI number?

An EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification number) is a unique identification number used by businesses and individuals engaging in customs activities within the European Union (EU). The EORI system is designed to streamline customs processes and improve security for goods crossing the EU's borders.
Application is FREE OF CHARGE

Key points about EORI numbers:

Purpose:

  • An EORI number is used to track and identify economic operators (businesses or individuals) when they import or export goods to/from the EU.
  • It simplifies customs procedures and is mandatory for anyone involved in cross-border trade within the EU or between the EU and non-EU countries.

Format:

  • The EORI number typically begins with the country code of the issuing EU member state (e.g., DE for Germany, FR for France, XI for Northern Ireland, ES for Spain, BE for Belgium).
  • This is followed by a unique code, usually derived from the national VAT number or other business identification number. For example, a UK-based business might have an EORI number starting with "GB," followed by the company’s VAT number.

Who Needs an EORI Number?

  • Businesses that import or export goods to or from the EU.
  • Individuals or non-commercial entities importing goods may also need an EORI number in certain circumstances.

How to Get an EORI Number:

  • Businesses apply for an EORI number through the customs authorities of the EU member state where they are based.
  • Non-EU businesses exporting to the EU can apply in the first member state they do business with.

Use:

  • The EORI number is required when filling in customs declarations or interacting with customs authorities across the EU. Without it, goods cannot be cleared for import or export.
